The origin of ice cream

Ice cream is a frozen food that expands in volume and is made mainly from drinking water, milk, milk powder, cream (or vegetable oil), sugar, etc., with an appropriate amount of food additives added, through processes such as mixing, sterilization, homogenization, aging, freezing and hardening.

Ice cream is loved all over the world, but many people think that this Western pastry was introduced to China from abroad. In fact, the earliest ice-cold drinks originated in China. At that time, emperors would take ice and store it in cellars to cool off, and then take it out to enjoy in summer. By the end of the Tang Dynasty, people used nitrate to cool water until it froze, and from then on, people could make ice in summer. In the Song Dynasty, merchants still added fruits or fruit juice to it. Merchants in the Yuan Dynasty even added fruit pulp and milk to ice, which was already very similar to modern ice cream.

The method of making ice cream was not brought to Italy until the 13th century by the Italian traveler Marco Polo. Later, there was a man named Charxin in Italy who added orange juice, lemon juice and other ingredients to the recipe brought back by Marco Polo, and it was called “Charxin” drink.

In 1553, when King Henry II of France got married, he invited a chef from Italy who could make ice cream. His cream ice cream amazed the French people. Later, an Italian introduced the recipe for ice cream to France. In 1560, a private chef, in order to change the flavor for the queen, invented a semi-solid ice cream. He mixed cream, milk and spices and carved patterns on it, making the ice cream more colorful and delicious. In the future, there will be more and more types of ice cream, which will become a kind of food that everyone likes.
