Berberine Hydrochloride, commonly known as berberine, is a quaternary ammonium alkaloid extracted from traditional Chinese medicines such as Huanglian and Huangbai. Its hydrochloride salt is commonly used in clinical practice as an anti diarrheal and antibacterial drug.
Ⅰ、 Basic Information
Chemical name: Berberine hydrochloride
Source: Natural extraction (Huanglian/Huangbai) or chemical synthesis
Appearance: Yellow crystalline powder, extremely bitter taste; The tablet is a yellow sugar coated tablet
Ⅱ、 Pharmacological effects
1. Antibacterial (core): Inhibits Gram positive/negative bacteria, with the strongest effect on Shigella, Escherichia coli, and Vibrio cholerae; It is also effective against Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella typhi, and other bacteria.
2. Intestinal function: Anti diarrhea+anti-inflammatory, reduces intestinal mucosal inflammation, decreases secretion, and alleviates abdominal pain and diarrhea.
3. Metabolic regulation (research hotspot): Activate AMPK, improve insulin resistance, and assist in lowering blood sugar/lipid levels; Inhibit intestinal glucose and lipid absorption and regulate microbiota.
4. Other: Weak anti arrhythmic, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, cardiovascular protection (requires medical guidance).
Ⅲ、 Indications (Indications)
✅ Intestinal infections caused by sensitive bacteria: acute gastroenteritis, bacterial dysentery, acute exacerbation of chronic enteritis.
✅ Diarrhea accompanied by abdominal pain and mucous stools (infectious).
❌ Non infectious diarrhea (such as catching a cold, irritable bowel, and indigestion) is ineffective.
Ⅳ、 Drug/food interaction (important)
1. Tannin containing foods/traditional Chinese medicine (tea, persimmons, pomegranates, schisandra): form insoluble complexes, reduce absorption, with a 2-hour interval.
2. Probiotics: Berberine antibacterial will kill probiotics, with an interval of 2 hours.
3. Metal ion drugs (iron, calcium, magnesium, aluminum agents): mutually affect absorption, with an interval of 2 hours.
4. Hypoglycemic drugs/antihypertensive drugs: enhance efficacy, prevent hypoglycemia/hypotension, need to be monitored.
Ⅴ、 Precautions
Effective only for bacterial infectious diarrhea, ineffective for viral/digestive diarrhea.
Do not take for a long time (≤ 7 days) to avoid imbalanced gut microbiota.
Changes in appearance (discoloration, fragmentation) are prohibited.
Protect from light and store in a sealed manner.
